What exactly is a database?

A database is simply a computer program that allows users to input data that can later be manipulated and retrieved. The information may be anything from customer information, to inventories, or orders. This information can be input manually, or even using a device such as a barcode-reader (for Point-Of-Sale, for instance).

One type of database that has gained a huge amount of popularity is the INTERnet Web Application, which allows the user or customer to enter information into the database via a web page. You have probably used a Web Application at some point to place an online order, make a bid at an online auction, or even to check your email. However, the uses of the Web Application are limitless, including private INTRAnet Web Applications for use inside a business' secure network.
